Most pastors agree that they probably would not be involved within this line of work unless they received some type of calling from a higher power. This calling is typically given from a deity that is worshiped within their belief system. The word pastor is most often associated with leaders of a Christian church though some other religions or belief systems have pastors as well. Since pastor is associated with Christianity then most pastors honestly believe that they receive their calling to become a pastor directly or indirectly from God. In other words, this particular profession is extremely unique since it has a supernatural aspect that many people cannot understand unless they were called for this purpose.

Basic Steps to become a Pastor

After a person has realized that they are called to become a pastor the next step is to take on some type of practical education in order to gain the necessary training and knowledge for the job. There are different pathways that people can take in order to become a pastor. Most people who are called to lead churches will complete college coursework and then seminary training. People can actually become pastors after they finish college but seminary school gives them the extra knowledge and skills that they need for their career.

There are many pathways that a person can take in order to become a pastor. They can complete a two-year associate’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree to start their careers. Students can also work toward a six-year degree or acquire a PhD in seminary training. Most pastoral training is given through a qualified seminary institution or some type of school that provides this instruction.

There are at least five different types of schools that could prepare a person for their duties as a pastor and they include:

A)

Theological Seminary is designed to educate students for leadership roles related to Christian ministry. This type of training is given to students in order to help them to understand theology, spiritual formation and to give them practical knowledge about ministering within a church. This type of schooling also involves upper graduate study and instruction.

B)

Divinity schools are other options for would be pastors but they put their emphasis on the academic study of Christianity. Divinity schools are usually a division within a larger university.

C)

Bible Institutes are designed to help people to gain a better knowledge of the Bible. Their focus is strictly on imparting biblical knowledge which can be used toward their ministry as a pastor.

D)

Bible colleges offer bible based undergraduate education about the Old and New Testament. This information will not necessarily prepare a person for the duties of a pastor but it will help to strengthen the knowledge of their faith in practical ways.

E)

Church-based seminary education is given by certain schools that might offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocational ministry.

Theological and seminary schools are the two primary ways that people train to become pastors. Many people complete a theology undergraduate degree before going on to finish their training in a seminary school.
